Rosh Hashona services in Bougainville, 1943. Hymen Noosbond is part of the group leading the service
My father, Hymen Noosbond, was in the Illinois National Guard when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was called up immediately and went for basic training. His outfit was on a re-fitted cruise ship going to relieve Baatan. When Baatan fell the ship was redirected to Australia. The first battle my dad was in was Guadalcanal. He spent 38 months in the Pacific and did his best to remain kosher throughout the war. He came home weighing 112 pounds. My dad conducted shabbos services and other holidays when there was no chaplain. – Shared by Debbie Yonker
